Makoko is a waterfront community often referred to as the ‘Venice of Africa’ because of the poor living conditions. There are 3,500 children within the ages of 5-15 years in the neighborhood; 218 of them attend Whanniyah Primary School, the only school in the area.
To provide assistance and address some of the issues faced, Africareeds partnered with ‘Sleeves Rolled Up’, a charity based in Lagos, to launch #MakokoLearns. The #MakokoLearns Literacy Project aims to support the only school in the area with educational materials, textbooks, teaching support and school expansion.
